MA Sustainable Design | Minneapolis College of Art and Design

Short biography

For the last decade, I have utilized my Community Health and Gerontology background to protect and improve the health of elders in retirement communities through research, education, and promotion of healthy lifestyles. I have worked as a Resident Program Director, Sales Associate and Outreach Specialist, and Sales and Marketing Leader in Colorado. Through these roles, I found that my true passion lies in building community and creating environments that foster a culture of care. Working with elders nearing end-of-life, I realized that much needs to be improved in teaching preventative and holistic care at a young age, and what beauty and health mean in a non-conventional, sustainable way.

I am obsessed with sauna and bathing culture and above all, I love nature. On a trip to Russia I had the pleasure of visiting my very first banya, located in central Moscow, Sandunoff. Stepping inside, I recalled my most fond memories of childhood: sitting in my grandparents’ sauna with my mom, sister, grandma, and great grandmother (in Northern MN). Washing away the dirt in the banya, I was reminded of being taught the importance of ritual, tradition, nature, community, and the power of silence through bathing practices. Here starts my story in pursuing a masters in Sustainable Design.

Sustainability statement

I believe it’s a designers role to help create visionary ideas to improve organizational wellbeing and community-level outcomes. I hope to use my MA in Sustainable Design to educate others about sustainable practices that help to prevent disease, poverty of the mind, and establish an atmosphere for a healthy lifestyle. To do so, I intend to be at the forefront of sustainable design within the professional bathing industry and beyond; providing cross-cultural communication on the topic of inclusivity and sustainability as it relates to customer engagement with nature and each other.

Thank you,

Cait
